Why Upcycling Furniture with a Professional Is the Best Thing You Can Do for Your Home and the Planet

Upcycled by M owner, Rebecca,

next to an upcycled heirloom

In today’s throwaway culture, where furniture is often bought cheaply and replaced just a few years later, there’s a quiet, thoughtful rebellion happening in homes like yours — a return to slower living, conscious choices, and meaningful design. I think during the Covid years, we all spent more time at home and re-evaluating what was important to us and our homes became much more like havens and a place where we wanted to feel truly nurtured.

That’s where upcycling comes in. Not just as a trend, but as a deeply satisfying way to restore, reimagine and reconnect with the furniture already in your life.

And when done professionally, the results can be breathtaking — not just for your room, but for the planet and your peace of mind.

The Deeper Sustainability of Upcycling

  • In the UK alone, millions of tonnes of furniture end up in landfill every year.

  • Much of it is still structurally sound — especially older, solid wood pieces like Stag, Ercol, Nathan and Old Charm.

  • The production of new furniture, even “eco” styles, often involves mass manufacturing, global shipping, and fast-wearing materials.

Upcycling changes that. By working with what already exists, we reduce waste, save resources, and minimise the carbon footprint that comes with buying new.

New ‘fast furniture’ isn’t made to last or stand the test of time like vintage furniture. You don’t see the craft-manship that went into vintage older pieces, like gorgeous dove tail and dowelled joints.

You don’t get that authentic feel to a room with modern ‘fast furniture’, that can be achieved with a mix of contemporary and vintage furniture. Upcycled old vintage pieces are often talking points within a room and a real way to feel connected to the past.

"I want my home to tell a story — not follow the crowd."

The Emotional Power of Transformation

Here are some Before and After photos of clients’ projects I have completed, so you can see the transformation. They really are unrecognisable and truly one-off, unique pieces.

Clients often come to me with pieces they’re emotionally tied to — a dresser from their parents, a table that’s held decades of family meals. But over time, these dark wood pieces don’t suit their home’s aesthetic.

Upcycling gives them new life.

  • The memories remain, but the piece feels fresh and elegant.

  • It becomes a centrepiece, not an eyesore.

  • Clients often feel a surge of joy and pride instead of guilt.

When the dresser returned it was far more beautiful than I could possibly have hoped for and the quality of finish means I know my daughters will have similar happy memories of those that I do from my childhood

What My Clients Say

Upcycled by M did a brillant job transforming my multi drawer unit. I’ve had it quite a long time, and felt it worth keeping as it was so useful but the pine looked dated and orangey. I’m delighted with the result, having chosen a light grey with new drawer knobs; it’s taken on a new life!

It wasn’t just a piece of furniture, but a family heirloom. When i went to see the finished bureau and pick it up, it was a very emotional moment, as the process had been personal, friendly and sensitive to the ‘story behind the bureau’ which was very important to me.
